My induction into photography began when I started taking photos of nature and wildlife in early 1980. At this time, I became involved with the peregrine falcon re-introduction program, as a wildlife consultant and technician (for McGill and Cornell Universities). I documented the re-introduction effort with a camera and in-depth reporting. The camera showed what would have taken pages of written documentation to describe. My love for the camera had blossomed, and soon I had a vast library of nature photography, including whales, birds, plants etc. Even when I cover conflict zones, I document the nature of the land where I am. This is evident in my book IRAQ: Eyewitness to War, where I incorporated photographs of nature, amongst photos of the horror of war. Whatever hellish situation I may find myself in, I can easily escape for a brief moment by observing the rhythms of the natural world. This helps me to keep my balance, and is a diversion mechanism when the world seems to be crashing and burning.
