During April and May of 2003, I travelled to Iraq to cover the US-led 'Operation Iraqi Freedom.' I wanted to document the war in Iraq and its effects on the Iraqi people and the soldiers and journalists. I conducted my work as a non-embedded photojournalist, covering the war from the street, rather than from the back seat of a military vehicle. I did end up spending two days and nights with the 101^st Airborne in a gutted Mosul hotel, as there were no other lodgings available. The 2003 invasion of Iraq, which started as an unfolding rose of hope for the impoverished people of Iraq, has now turned to poison. The result of my journey to Iraq was the compilation of the book IRAQ: Eyewitness To War’ A Photojournalist's Diary, (Galbraith 2003). With over 500 colour photos and 100,000 words of accompanying text, Eyewitness drags the reader into the dark abyss of the human mind at war. We all live close to the precipice that we call civilization and in this book we realize how easy it is to fall or be pushed off the edge, no matter who we are or where we live.
